Brick by Brick

The game Brick by Brick follows Belle, an architect working on redesigning Bergen op Zoom. However, many citizens have expressed dissatisfaction with the proposed changes. Despite her best efforts to accommodate the citizens, the manager is considering canceling the entire project, which would result in Belle losing her job.

The artifact in the game is a robot called the Super Fast Helpassistant (SFH). The SFH acts as the player’s guide throughout the game and replaces traditional phones. This innovation keeps players more present in the moment and fosters stronger social connections.

By playing Brick by Brick, participants gain insight into how communities operate and the difficulties that arise within them. They also come to understand that change is a process it is not always linear but occurs step by step, or, as the game emphasizes, brick by brick.

My role within this project was primarily as a game programmer, where I was responsible for coding and implementing key functionalities. Additionally, I contributed to shaping the storyline by generating ideas and helping to develop the narrative structure.

I enjoyed working on this project because it combined technical problem-solving with creativity. Programming allowed me to bring the game’s mechanics to life, while my involvement in the storyline let me explore ideas for storytelling and creating engaging worlds. The opportunity to contribute ideas and see them integrated into both the narrative and gameplay made this project especially rewarding.
